I was approached to submit a proposal for a supergraphic for the JJC Math department. This was part of an ongoing relationship between the Math and Fine Arts Departments at the school. I wanted this project to equally represent both of the departments. As I was beginning to conceptualize this project I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. They had just taken their copy of The Great Wave Off Kanagawa out of storage and it immediately inspired me. The numbers behind the graphic is the representation of the print’s title in a numbered alphabetic code. The wave representing the fluid possibilities of graphs within math.
